CCQ and Customs organize orientation session for Border Management students

The Community College of Qatar and the General Authority of Customs organized an orientation session for 40 of customs employees enrolled in the Bachelor of Border Management , starting next September.

The session was presented by Dr. David Widdowson, the Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Customs and Excise Studies at Charles Sturt University, Australia, who made a visual presentation about the components of the academic program which includes 8 specialized courses for two years starting September 2018.

Dr. Widdowson stated that Qatar Customs is the first in the Middle East region to apply this specialized program, which will have a positive impact on the customs performance in Qatar. “The Bachelor of Border Management will help students to fully understand the mechanism of the work of all parties involved in managing the ports of entry and will enable Customs to fully control the borders”, said Dr. Widdowson. He also pointed out that the World Customs Organization welcomed this pioneering program and accredited the courses to be offered.

CCQ Dean, Dr. Abdallah Hazaimeh described the launch of the Bachelor of Border Management as an important step in developing the Associate of Applied Science in Customs Management program launched 4 years ago. “It was just a matter of time to start the Bachelor program in border management. We have qualified cadres to develop this program and to graduate qualified staff in customs with Bachelor’s degree, which does not exist in most countries”, added Dr. Hazaimeh saying that this program is a source of pride for the State of Qatar, the General Authority of Customs, and CCQ.

Dr. Abdulnassir Al Tamimi, the Associate Dean for Workforce and Community Development at CCQ stated that CCQ in partnership with Charles Sturt University got the accreditation to teach the Bachelor of Border Management in Qatar. “I extend my thanks to the former president of CCQ Dr. Ibrahim Al-Naimi and the Chairman of General Authority of Customs Mr. Ahmed Bin Abdullah Al Gammal for their strong support to the program”, said Dr. Al Tamimi adding that the Bachelor program will help the customs employees to enhance their performance.

From his side, the Director of Customs Training Center, Mr. Mubarak Al Buainain, said that the candidates were chosen among the distinguished graduates of the academic program “Associate of Applied Science in Customs Management”. “It’s in the best interest of the General Authority of Customs to start a new phase of this academic program as it helps strengthening the abilities of our employees and developing their actual performance at work”, affirmed Mr. Al Buainain, adding that the Authority is planning to expand the main program “Associate of Applied Science in Customs Management” to include a larger number of customs cadre.

CCQ signed an MOU with the General Authority of Customs months ago for the delivery of a Bachelor of Border Management to the customs employees wishing to continue their study at university level, in addition to maintaining the Associate of Applied Science in Customs Management degree which witnessed 4 batches of graduates.

CCQ also signed an MOU with the Centre for Customs and Excise Studies at Charles Sturt University, Australia that focuses on coordinating, exchanging experiences and providing of teaching cadres and accredited curricula for the bachelor's program for customs employees, thus strengthening the memorandum of understanding with customs.
