CCQ participates in USLS held in Malaysia

A delegation of the Community College of Qatar (CCQ) students and employees has participated in the 10th edition of the University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS), which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from August 1 to7, 2019. Themed “Together We Serve,” the weeklong event saw a huge turnout of over 1,500 attendees representing 100 different countries worldwide.

This visit comes as part of the College’s constant efforts to leave a notable mark on the field of civic engagement and community development through effective participation in local and international initiatives. USLS aimed at enhancing the leadership skills of the participating students, who attended lectures and workshops presented by a committee of professional and world-renowned life coaches and humanitarian workers. The participants also took part in a diverse range of activities designed to inspire them to implement a positive change in their communities.

Speaking about the lessons and values he earned from participating in the Symposium, Mohamad Al-Suwaidi, Information Technology student at CCQ and a member of the College’s delegation, said: “This trip has added to me enormously both personally and professionally. On a personal level, I was touched to the core by the stories I heard from the refugees who fled their conflict-ridden areas and war-inflicted countries. I closely witnessed those people’s misery and suffering, which has rendered me more aware of both their problems and needs. I have also heard the personal experiences of charity workers and activists from different countries, and I was introduced to their contributions in making the world a better place. Therefore, I have become more enthusiastic about partaking in charity activities. On a professional level, the personal narratives of the lecturers have spurred me to pursue my goals and harness my skills and abilities towards becoming an active member in serving my community.”

For her part, Ms. Shaya AlHajri, of the Student Activities Section at CCQ and one of the participating delegates in USLS, emphasized that this experience has helped improve CCQ students’ vision about life and their awareness of the most pressing humanitarian issues in the world. Most importantly, she noted that the students learned about issues caused by wars and conflicts, such as the refugee crisis, human trafficking, and living under the poverty line. According to her, the heartbreaking personal accounts she listened to from affected people who experienced the ravages of wars first-hand, has rendered her keener towards helping the needy and the less fortunate in society.

In addition, CCQ delegation has donated a sum of money to those in need during a visit paid to a refugee organization, where the delegation’s members were introduced to handmade items and artworks done by refugee children. The visit is aligned with the Symposium’s most crucial goals; aiming to instill leadership values in youth, both in theory and in practice.

Delivering his speech at USLS, the Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad touched upon a number of vital points, including the qualities that should be embraced by true leaders, such as integrity, and steadfastness, as well as being life-long learners.

It is worth noting that this initiative targets youth aged 18-30, in a bid to encourage them to be shining role models in their communities through the multitude of learning experiences it provides them with. These experiences enable them to learn the skills of self-confidence and autonomy, besides other skills they need in order to be future leaders in their societies. Since its inception in 2010, the initiative has positively affected the lives of more than 7,000 young people around the globe.
