CCQ holds lecture on dialogue skills

The Humanities Department at the Community College of Qatar (CCQ) hosted Dr. Omar Al-Shebly, Professor of Hadith and Prophet Biography at Al-Zaytoonah University, who presented an educational lecture entitled “Skills of Dialogue”.

The lecture addressed dialogue as a means of presentation of opinions and an attempt to persuade. The lecturer also highlighted the most important components of dialogue. Among them are a strong personality and displaying self-confidence, while at the same time, not provoking or diminishing the other party, as well as, the ability to correct one’s self in case of errors.

The lecture attracted a massive turnout of students and faculty members. Dr. Ismail Ghassab Al-Adawi, Professor of Islamic Culture, pointed out that Quran and stories of the prophets mention the dialogues that researchers should refer to for the purpose of deriving the origins and foundations of dialogue, in addition to its components and aims.

For his part, Dr. Musaad Al-Najjar, Professor of Psychology, emphasized the importance of distinguishing between respecting and accepting another’s opinion, and listening to it, as the interlocutors may not accept everything the other party says. However, they must listen and support their case with evidence.

Dr. Khadija Al-Abdullah, Professor of Islamic Culture, also pointed to the need to refer to the biography of the Prophet Muhammed, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, and Islamic heritage, to benefit from their knowledge in establishing proper dialogue and its etiquette.
