English Language Center (ELC)

Foundation English Level 1 is a General English course intended to provide students with a foundation from which they can advance from A1.2 Basic User (CEFR) to A2.2 Basic User (CEFR). It is a pre-requisite for Level 2.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to do the following at the appropriate CEFR level:

Reading
• Identify main idea and supporting details in simple familiar topic texts
• Extract specific information from everyday simple materials.

Writing
• Write simple sentences on familiar topics like jobs, personal skills, likes and dislikes.
• Write a short paragraph on given topics with a topic sentence, three supporting details and a conclusion on simple familiar topics.
• Construct compound sentences using level appropriate conjunctions such as ‘and”, ‘but’ etc.

Listening
• Listen to and extract basic information on names, numbers and dates from a simple clear audio text.
• Infer details and interpretations from given dialogues, stories and interviews.
• Extract short simple instructions and directions if addressed carefully and slowly.

Speaking
• Describe personal likes and dislikes using simple language.
• Introduce themselves, their hobbies and interests in a simple way.
• Describe an object or a place using simple language.
• Ask and answer simple questions on daily familiar topics like jobs, likes, dislikes, and daily routines.​
